Had a nice Fathead moment this morning, will not be redoing the entire comic, just will apply to the last two panels. Next book will be stronger.
Fathead Day 4
So I have two more panels and then lay it out then post it. Also this weekend I'm have to print and bind some copies. This has made the week go by really quick. I'm not particularly in love with any of it, other than the doing of it. We will see how it cleans up in the machine, but I can only spend another hour on it after today, so cleaning it up may be the thing that has to go.
Elsewhere in the world... ebola, war, famine, riots, and advanced reviews say Interstellar isn't the best movie ever made after all. I hope we as a species can survive this.

Fathead Day 3, low hanging fruit.
Leaving the house, ready to roll. Much more equilibrium. Have 5 more drawings to close this story out. I had planned it as a 24 panel thing, but chopped it in half and have been just trying to combine as many listed beats as possible. This is causing a bit of a pile up now that I am getting toward the end. This may have an ink spill ending that wraps it up in one panel. Kinda like an explosion. If this ends in an explosion on the last panel you will know I ran out of time.

Fathead Day 2
Good morning. About to split and grind some coffee. 4:30 am is like living on the moon.
Going to get four more done today. Drink some coffee. Make some coffee. Eat some eggs. Answer some phones. Type on a computer. Drive home. Get kids to bed. Blog it. Crash and sleep.
And go.

End of Day One... Fathead
So yeah, good day, got 4 down, 8 to go. I suppose this is the least ambitious thing you could shoot for, but there is a lot of math going on the the head about this. Mainly, what is the end point, and what is the time worth, and at what point have you spent too much time on a project. Most everything I do takes about five years, and so this is called shock therapy to break me of that habit.
So a mini comic can really only sell for about a buck, maybe two. (Rationally though, 25 cents.) So say I can sell 25 of these, say I get all high minded and sell them for two bucks, and make 50. If I spend 5 years making a mini comic, that really isn't sustainable. That's like a buck a year. But if I spend 5 hours making one, then ten bucks an hour may seem sane and rational. So what can I do in five hours. I can draw 12 pictures and lay them out. Print them. Staple them. And at the end of the 5 hours I can walk away and never look back. I just have to remember that "good" is the enemy of "done".

Fathead 4 of 12. Done on third break and right after work. Not having time to think about it may hurt the craft, but I'm making up for it by not thinking about it.
So on lunch, this one done on first break and now lunch, mangled the phone so will put these two together on magic computer.
Big Plan: Fathead, Day 1 of 5
Back on the full schedule today. So the big plan is to squeeze in a panel on breaks and lunch. A panel a day. Will start the 12 panel mini comic today. Doing a clearing of old ideas in this format.
2014 has been the least creative year of my life. Been nothing but harsh cold reality. Sometimes you get so deep in the trenches that everything else gets pushed aside. That's been me. But if you don't make time for your dreams, they die. Too bad, money. Just the way it is.
So with lack of time, these panels are custom for a person on the go. Quick and sporty with not much analysis. Get these out and see how the equilibrium starts to feel.
The story is called Fathead, made up in high school, was going to be a short at one point, now I'm just going to draw it out, just to have it exist in some form.
I'll post panels as they come along.

Halloween Horror Fest #2: Quick Notes on "You're Next" (2011)

I have a big sappy grin on my face. The gorehound is fed and my inner fanboy was given a big bro hug. Some movies are better after you sit through a million terrible ones. Long suffering horror nerds, don't turn away from your genre. Take a breath and watch this first. "You're Next" makes all those terrible slasher movies worth it.
I learned that rich people are terrible. They have no connection to themselves or others. It's all about the cash. Poor people are terrible too. Willing to do anything to get a taste of the good life. The only decent people are not from America. I learned New England makes terrible people. Australians are awesome.
In the movie, up tight rich people act snotty and treat each other terribly. Imagine a typical episode of Dynasty. Now imagine in the middle of Dynasty, a gang of slashers right out of an 80's movie crash the party and start killing everyone. It's the greatest final episode of any soap opera ever. The only thing missing is Joan Collin's head rolling down the stairs.
This movie is a secret handshake to horror freaks. In the first ten minutes of the movie, Barbara Crampton knows to leave at the first sign of trouble. Points. The good taste to cast Barbara Crampton. More Points. Ti West plays an auteur filmmaker in a pretentious hipster scarf. Larry Fessenden stops by for an embarrassing love scene. Having the most over qualified final girl ever... you win, movie.
This may be "Not Another Home Invasion Movie", but it's great. Lots of blood, guts, and painful moments. Blender. Nail. The running joke of the pop song playing on repeat. So much good stuff in this movie to soothe the jilted fan. See it if you've seen too many.

Halloween Horror Fest #1: Quick Notes on The Wolf Man (1941)

This came out right after Pearl Harbor. The attack of, not the Michael Bay Movie. While Lon Chaney Jr. was stalking Universal's backlot, the Japanese Army was stalking us! War and Werewolves have a connection. There's even a movie call War Wolves (wish I had thought of that).
Nazi's were symbolized as wolves. In American Werewolf in London, Nazi Wolves bust into a suburban home and kill the family inside. In Wolf Man, people marked with a pentagram are doomed to die. Larry Talbot seemed like a nice guy, but became a snarling beast. Men acting like beasts.
Wolf Man is different because he wants nothing to do with his condition. He was just fine being a suave man of the world. Now look at him, cold blooded murderer. Dracula loved being Dracula. Frankenstein was born that way, and so he was playing the hand he'd been dealt. Larry Talbot is great because he's the self loathing monster.
Lon Chaney Jr. was a heavy drinker and a real brawler. He and his drinking buddies would get sloppy drunk and destroy their dressing rooms. Heavy drinking would eventually kill him. If you see his later roles, it's pretty sad to see the effect all this self abuse. When he died, they dissected his body to show students the damage a lifetime of heavy drinking does.
Not a lecture on sobriety or the horrors of war, but this subtext makes The Wolf Man a favorite of mine. Werewolves are a hard nut to crack. The make up has to be convincing or you wind up with a guy in a bear costume. Wolf Man's big game show host hair and puppy nose looks silly, but Lon Chaney Jr. sells it. The real scary stuff is his human form, wrestling with what he is. Existential horror!
