So I didn't finish Episode 7 but got a lot of progress. Just going to flip the hourglass and start over.

Here is the section I finished today. The dad looking for his missing monkey daughter in the seedy back alleys. He might be able to beat some information out of this clown. This is sort of a noir-inspired section.

30 Day Challenge: Finish CvM Episode 7 - Day 18

Today I am cleaning up the kung fu battle scene. It is a wreck.

Here are the problems I'm working on.

- What happens to the clowns when they get killed? Can I have a big pile of bodies, or should I have them spiral off-screen?

- The insert of the clown head being stuck in the chipper has to be put together.

- blood sprays coming from the chipper will be tough

- there is a lot of garbage in the rabid clown shots that need to be removed.

- Tightening the scene up, making it snappy.

Today I added the sound effects to the dojo office and superimposed the joke Tippy writes.

30 Day Challenge: Finish CvM Episode 7 - Day 12

Today I started the shower scene.

- Rendered the dialog track. Glad I did as Premiere glitched later that day and disassociated the individual sound clips. Love that Premiere!

- The figures were already placed from an earlier push, so today I am animating the tumor baby that was provided to me by UK Sensation Rory Binks back in 2010. He did the character animation, I'm just moving it around the shot.

- The next thing will be to add splats and gushy sound effects. Then render it. Then light it.

Wow, so I've been out of town, and just got in. So yeah, pretty beat, but here are the next few steps.

- add whoosh and impact sounds to the dojo chicken beating scene.

- render the sound fx and dialog tracks for dojo scene.

- start on the hospital shower scene. I would like to have the shower scene done by the weekend. It's a mess.

So what's happening here is the cult leader Bonzo is egging on his minions to beat the funny into the blue clown Sluggo. The minions are hitting him with rubber chickens that have bricks stuffed into them. Ya know, the usual.

The pain was animating all those rubber chickens. But worth it! Worth it? I'm sticking with worth it.

30 Day Challenge: Finish CvM Episode 7 - Day 2

Yesterday I started back up on the Clown Versus Monkey movie after taking a break to mess with the Gamemaker Studio software. As much as I liked it, it would never be something I could do all day. Fun, but it didn't keep me up at night.

Clown Versus Monkey, however, follows me around all day.

So here is a screenshot. The kitchen is coming apart and the star of the film, Frozen Ham, finally takes the stage.

A nice video I watched is below. This guy spent 13 years making a three issue comic and shares some insight on bad work habits he identified that slowed him down. I certainly could identify and hope to can learn from this experiment to get the next project done quicker.

Today's Brain Chain

Hey, here is the chain.

- Made Bacon. Didn't eat it.


- Started thinking about Virtuosity movie from the 90s.

- Focused in on the song Party Man by Peter Gabrial.

- So happens that this song just got released on Spotify on 4/14/19.



- Sat on back porch and listened.

- Realized that there were giant holes in my Gabriel exposure.

- Started first album, CAR, determined to sit and listen to the whole durn thing, like people used to do.

- It's okay.

- The big discovery was Here Comes the Flood. This song rules.



- Read what his thoughts were when he wrote it.

- It was about a psychic flood, everyone's thoughts invading everyone else's thoughts with no walls to hold them back.

- He was thinking about short wave radio when he wrote it, but I thought it fits great with the internet world we live in now.

- That got me thinking about the movie Scanners, about how the lead could not keep other people's thoughts out of his head. Most roads lead back to Scanners. I named my son after the main character in Scanners, Cameron.

30 Day Challenge - GameMaker Studio - Day 14 and 15

Hello Humans,

I had the day off to do teacher meetings and doc stuff. So now I can just mess around with this program. I started a platformer tutorial and working with the GameMaker Language versus the drag and drop method I had been using.

The problem with the drag and drop is that when you mess something up, you have to dig around for the line of code you fouled up, and the text editor is hidden somewhere secret. No one knows where.

Coding is more like magic. You type in nonsense and magic happens. It's like writing a screenplay, except if your screenplay program had a PLAY button and you could watch it right there. Pretty neat.

So here is what we have so far. Cameron would be satisfied with these graphics. He likes that retro look.

30 Day Challenge - GameMaker Studio - Day 10 and 11

Got this done right when I got home, before watching two episodes of Umbrella Acadamy with my eldest and then passing out. I dreamed of my whole family at a coffee shop, including extended family. In the corner, I see director Zach Snyder. He's sitting alone and trying to look busy with a briefcase of documents, and by fiddling with a laptop. He looks awkward and even has braces on his teeth. My attention returns to my chaotic family. Then, through the den of the busy cafe, I hear a lone sad tenor. I look over and there is Zach Snyder slowly singing a line about how no one understood why he put that big musical number in Man of Steel. I responded in my own tenor, that I liked that scene, and didn't care what the internet said.

There is no big musical number in Man of Steel.

Here is how breakout is going. Just need to add sound effects and make the game reset when I lose the three lives.


The computer was doing something weird, so there is a drag in performance. I must be running a scan.

Today I started Breakout, due to the demand of Cameron. Much easier than Asteroids thus far.

I got the ball to bounce, the bricks to be in random colors, and the bat to go left and right.

Still to go, give the player three lives, make the bricks react to being hit, and make some groovy sound effects.

But I learned to add debris and laser fire. Cameron drew the arrow the ship is firing. I haven't figured out how to make the arrow point in the direction it is being fired in yet, but I'm sure it will come up.

30 Day Challenge: GameMaker Studio - Day 2

Today I learned how to add sprites to objects, objects to instances, and then add functions to the objects. This software is a lot of fun! We are making an Asteroids clone, and Cameron is sitting beside me while I tinker away, his brain full of game ideas.

From what I knew on day one to now is a big leap. This is going to be a cool trainset to mess with.

And here is the where we are at on our version of Asteroids, probably the hardest game ever. Notice I added a space fetus.



It is not lost to me that if I could do this in 1972, I would have been the smartest person you knew.

30 Day Challenge: GameMaker Studio - Day 1

To clear my head of Clowns and Monkeys, I've decided to work 30 days on GameMaker Studio and see how far I get.

Episode 6 of CvM is up, and the goal is to finish it this year. but there are other things I want to mess with, and this software, I've cracked it open before but got distracted. So I'm going to working for the next 30 days and see if I can get a basic game out of it.

CvM did get me thinking about controlling the environment and possibly making a game version of one of the old stories I have laying around. It could be a new outlet. So here we go.

Today I did the first tutorial on YouTube.


It just showed me around but already I feel I understand the interface more this time out. The tutorial I tried a year ago wasn't as clear. This one starts very basically, which is where I am at.

What did I accomplish on this go around?

Well, I understand now what a room, sprite, object, and an instance is.

Room = Level
Sprite = Picture
Object = An element that exists in your gave with all its attributes detailed.
Instance = The object placed into the game.

And I drew this wiggling fetus sprite thing.
