My Actual Life: 2015 - Week 11/53
- Back in the routine this week, no pager, got some drawings done.
- Took kids to park at Abernathy Greenway, the most ridiculous park in the world. It's like a sculpture garden that is supposed to double as a playground. It is right by a major road, so lots of exhaust and traffic sounds to add to the over all air of industrial oppression. My kids kicked around for a bit, and then frustrated, screamed at me, "How's is this supposed to be fun!?!"
That was the only different thing that happened. We went to get fro-yo. We did have Aunt Angela come in this weekend and she bought nachos for everyone. I spent Saturday sleeping and watching movies. The Sacrament, good but depressing. Universal Soldier: Days of Reckoning, bad but somehow I didn't turn it off. Good fight scenes. Harmontown, funny doc about the guy who created the show Community, funny, and also interesting how self obsessed we all are and how desperate we are to be understood, find a social niche we fit into. I mean whatever, when you're twenty I suppose.

My Actual Life: 2015 - Week 10/53
Here's some stuff that went on. Because I will remember none of it. In five years it will give me a suggestion of this week.
1. Cameron wrote me his first letter, telling me to remember to poop during the day. Not a big deal to anyone, but for Cameron to finally be picking this stuff up is a big deal for me.
2. He drew me an awesome picture of a robot.
3. We got through the Katie Becket renewal process. 3rd year in a row, and every year is a struggle.
4. Abbie thrives on telling on Cameron. She is so excited to tell me about his bad behavior when I get home.
5. Did some drawings this week. Working on a comic that was free form panels, just drawing pictures and coming up with some narration to tie them together. Sounds awesome? It's not. Hate them. They feel to self indulgent. My next comic is going to be Volcaniac!
6. On Pager Duty. First rule of Pager Duty, you don't freaking talk about it. Bad vibes! But having the air card saved me this weekend.
7. I have a smart phone now so the little attention span I had is gone.
8. Played with the kids all day on the trampoline on Saturday. Sunday I could barely move.
9. Cameron calls Captain D's "Fish'n'Sticks", which is a great name for a made up restaurant.
10. Sarah could be a gym teacher.
11. Harve Bennett and Albert Maysles died. Harrison Ford wrecked his plane, but walked away.
12. Steph had some great clients, business is steady. People are giving up smoking.
13. My beloved Movie Meltdown podcast has fallen on hard times. I and a few others donated to get them a new computer, but alas things are looking grim.
14. Borrowed a Micrograph pen from a friend at work. It was nice, but Sharpie has my soul bought and paid for. I like pen nibs, then brushes, then felt tips. But it is too hard to have an open jar of ink while I doodle in the car between gigs.
15. Movies I watched:
Eddie Pepitone: In Ruins" - Awesome, big fan now.
Improv Documentary - meh
The Disbelievers - Do they have to be assholes too?
Mortified Nation - Awesome
Trance - Fell asleep, rented it for Steph and she hated it. Hypnosis portrayed as super dangerous.
Gone Girl - 4/5 - Pretty great, like a dark parody of marriage.
Spring Breakers - 2.5/5 - I liked the experimental side of it, but after a while I wanted it to get on with it. My eyes still hurt from all the day glow.
16. Took Abbie and Steph to the WaHo on Monday and we ate till we blacked out.
17. Sunday, took Cameron out on the town. Went to BBQ, Roswell Mill (which is a trail by an old mill), and then WaHo for pie.
18. When Abbie pretends to be sick and I check her, I'll say, "How's your ears?", and in a pitiful voice she will answer, "Not good." "How's your throat?" "Not good." And so on.

Best Shot: Phase IV - 1974
So what if you gave the guy who made the awesome title sequences to Psycho and North By Northwest a chance to make a whole movie? Well, you'd get Phase IV, a movie about killer ants. But it's not like a Bert I. Gordon killer ant movie. These ants out think you and make you die from shame. Or something. The movie has some nature run a muck trappings, but it is really a cold, slow, thoughtful peace of early 70s sci-fi. I really love it. What I love most is where Bass didn't have any humans around with their messy emoting and could just show the ants in the ant hill. That stuff is the best. Here the super smart ants have lined up their fallen dead. I mean "wow", right? It's like a guy who does food ad photography made a horror movie!

Best Shot: Evil Dead - 1982
Here is my favorite moment from Evil Dead. We've just had 90 minutes of screaming and chainsawing and crazy crazy mayhem. Here in the big special effect finale, Raimi does something brilliant with the edit and the sound design and turns it all down to nothing. Ash can't look at the weird decomposing zombies around him and retreats into his head for a moment. There is very little sound or movement, and the effect is very eerie. This all pays off a moment later he dares to look up and...

Best Shot: Glengarry GlenRoss - 1992
Not very remarkable, huh? Well, the style of this movie is really dated now, with all the primary color back lights, but what it does right is doing nothing. Here is the best moment in a movie filled with big moments. It's all in Keven Spacey's eyes as he figures out the big hook of the plot. I like it when you can see a character thinking something through. The shot is all about him. No big purple light in the background making it look like an episode of Silk Stockings.

Best Shot: War of the Worlds - 2005
This movie has its haters, but golly gosh I really love it. Now I know this frame may not be that impressive, but the shot it inhabits is. First it is about 3 minutes of info being dumped at the audience, just piled on the audiences lap, but you don't mind because of all the cinematic razzle dazzle going on. The car is barreling down a highway, dodging hundreds of stranded motorists, in the drizzling rain, while the camera rotates 360 degrees around it, going into the car, back out, around and around, while it also dodges cars and debris. There is so much going on in this shot, I get a nosebleed thinking about how you start to breaking down the ridiculous amount of logistics to grab it. The shot shows what you can do when you got the money and all the best people working for you, including John Williams giving such a great soundtrack. The track for this shot is "Escape from the City", and listening to it on my commute makes everything epic.

SKETCH GUTTER: Bolt Head
BEST SHOT: Severed - 2001
Severed! I have a real soft spot in my heart for this movie. It was made for no money in a time before God gave us a seamless digital workflow. The same movie made today with the same budget would look like a Michael Bay production. Director Matt Green was the first grown ass man I met who still was on fire to make movies. Our little group of friends contributed ideas to the script and Matt ran off and made it. This was all before Atlanta became this big production hub. I think we had Robocop 3 and Freejack to brag on. Anyway, for zero dollars, the movie has a lot of ambition, most notably a midnight car chase through the streets of Atlanta that shows mucho guerrilla guts. Above is my favorite shot, a guy getting his head cut off by the killer's portable guillotine.

Sketch Gutter: Screw Head
BEST SHOT: Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn - 1982
So in light of recent world events, here is a shot from THE SCENE in Star Trek 2. I was going to post him doing the finger sign against the glass, that was the shot that most stuck as a kid, but this is a cool shot too. Spock walks up and bumps into the glass, but before you get a good look at his gnarly face you can only sit it reflected over Kirk's face. He took Kirk's place and did the ultimate act of heroism. I don't know it the reflection was intentional, but it is a neat effect.
